Battle for Farming Freedom

Colonel’s Blog, Earthdate 12 March 2023…

Hey Y’all!

Good evening and happy Tuesday from Free Missouri! The weather is awesome! It’s great to experience a few days of Spring this year. Last year we went from a very long winter to summer. It’s looking like a few more good days in the forecast. The pic today is a preview for you guys of an upcoming YouTube video. We had VERY special guests help us with the sheep this week. As you know, we have about 70 ewes and 2 rams. We needed to work the entire group by cleaning and trimming their hooves, giving them their annual vaccination against Clostridium and Tetanus, deworming anyone who needs it, and putting ear tags in about 25 ewes. That amount of work with a group that size is quite the undertaking so our friends offered to come over and lend a hand. We are going to make a video of the experience that I’m sure will be a fun one. At the end of the day, all sheep were tended to, as prescribed, and the rams were separated and put in with the dairy cows where they will hang out until November. We separate the rams so that we don’t have lambs in the winter. It’s early to take them out, but the opportunity was there and we took it. All in all, the sheep are looking really good. There are about 5 or 6 whose feet are still in pretty bad shape but with another trimming or two, they will be fine. They look WAY better than they have the past 2 years and we are expecting a fine lambing season starting in about 3 weeks. This is the last week on the farm for 4 of the hogs as they will be going to the processor on Monday. The layer hens continue to up their game and we’re consistently getting 5 dozen eggs a day. Let me tell you, it doesn’t take long for the eggs to stack up when you’re bringing in over 400 eggs each week!

I’m excited about this Thursday’s upcoming podcast where we talk about Electronic Identification (EID) mandates for cattle. It’s a hot topic right now and we dive deep into the issue. As I’m sure you can imagine, Shelley gets a bit animated at times! This one is going to be a good one you’re not going to want to miss. The basic idea is that EID funding, to the tune of $15,000,000 was inserted into the recent omnibus spending bill. Some Representatives like Thomas Massie from KY and Harriet Hageman from WY are being quite vocal in their opposition to the idea. The crux of their argument lies in the assertion that the imposition of mandatory EID tags represents an overreach of federal authority, lacking explicit statutory authorization from Congress. This unilateral move by the USDA, funded by a $15 million allocation hidden within an omnibus bill, is perceived not only as an encroachment on farmers' rights to operate without undue government intervention but also as a potential tool for larger corporate entities to further consolidate power within the meat industry. Moreover, the underlying motivations for this rule—ostensibly to streamline disease traceability—are viewed skeptically by critics who see it as a pretext for advancing broader environmental agendas that could restrict beef production under the guise of sustainability. I’m sure you guessed, Shelley and I are against this bill, and anything like it that encroaches on our freedoms. This is but another Battle for Farming Freedom!

On Saturday's farm video, we showcase the new addition to the farm...a new A2/A2 Jersey heifer, bred to a registered A2/A2 Jersey bull!

Check out Monday’s Dust’er Mud podcast where we answer a question regarding A2/A2 milk and the different forms which milk is found.

Cheers!
